Creating page in Confluence

Share me please

Creating page in confluence is very simple process. We can accomplish this by one of two ways:

  1. Creating fully blank page.
  2. Creating page from one of very many ready to use templates.

In the next part of the article I will show you both ways and you will also see how look all predefined templates.

Creating blank page

In order to create blank page we need to click on Create button in the main top menu.

When the creation process will be done we should see a blank page like below.

The last thing is what we need to do is to click on Publish button to save the page.

Worth to note is that it is important thing from what view we are clicking on Create button.

1. If we were previously in the main Demonstration Space page then it will be created page under the main root (directly under the space name).

For example we would have such an address: Demonstration Space / Pages / Welcome to Confluence / Test page

2. If we were previously on any different pages than main page in space then new page will be created the page we were.

For exampe we would have such an address: Pages / Welcome to Confluence / The page you were in / Test page.

Creating page from templates

We can also create page using set of predefined tempates.

Confluence team defined over 16 different templates like below. In order to run any template you need to select space, click on the template and click Create button.

In the article detailed description of page layout in Confluence you will see how to design such a layouts like these below proposed by Atlassian team.

Below I present list of full available templates to be possible to choose:

1. Blank page

Running this option you will get blank page without any layouts proposals.

2. Blog post

From the layout perspective there is no difference between blog post and blank page. The only difference is in the presentation of a blog page.

Blog post page is presented under Blog section in the left sidebar and is grouped into year and month. This page migth very usefull for internal blogging in your company.

3. DACI Decision

DACI decision allows us to verify the flow of decisions between members in the team. When we create such new decision we can select status from one of defined:

  • Not started
  • In progress
  • Decided

We can also assign people that run decision and approve it. The last option gives us a possibility to set final date that decision should be made.

Proposal layout for DACI decision is very extensive and we can also modify it and match to our needs. For example we can remove some sections and add new ones.

Creating new DACI decision is also possible from special page named DACI Register. DACI Register page is available from the left sidebar.

4. Decision

Decision page is a simplified version of DACI Decision. It is more focused on more general decisions so we have Owner and Stakeholders instead of Driver and Approver.

Below is presented page with newly created decision.

And like with DACI Decision we also have one page called here Decision log that gathers all decisions in one place.

5. Experience canvas

Experience canvas page allows us to save some experiences in the forms of notes. Every notes save information when it was lastly modified.

6. File list

This kind of page works great if you need to keep your project files in one place and share it to other members of a team.

In first step we need to type the name of the page (like in any other page types), fill short description and what is new we need to select users that will have an access to the page.

Newly create page in edit mode looks like below. Later in advanced page configuration we will see that File list page uses special plugin called in Confluence a macro.

In preview mode we can see very simple but helpfull page where we can drag and drop files into it.

Like with decision pages also with File page you can get lists of File pages in one place:
