Jira lesson 02 – installation process

Jira installation process is very easy even for someone who never did it. In general installation consists from 3 simple steps:

  • downloading server version of Jira,
  • running standard installation file,
  • configuring Jira by web brower (first account and project).

Downloading server version of Jira

  1. Let’s go to the google.com and type the text: jira server download. We will see at the top results the link Download Jira Software Server | Atlassian. Click on it and go inside.
  2. For demonstration purposes I will select Windows 64-bit 30 Days Unlimited users version. Click Download button.
  3. Select local directory in your file system and downloading process will start.

Running standard Jira installation process

When you download the installation file the run it. During this presentation we use Jira Software 7.3.7 version.

On the first screen we click Next button.

This step is important. If you have previously installed Jira on the machine then select the last option: Upgrade an existing Jira installation. We select Express Install (use default settings).

In this installation window we see where Jira wants to be installed. Leave this settings as it is.

We click Install button and installation started to copy all files into local file systems.

When Jira finish installation we will be asked if we want to start the system. Click Next button.

Now we need to wait when all jira services are running.

After that we can go from classic windows installer process into web browser where we finish setup of Jira.

Configuring Jira by web browser

At first we need to select installation variant. For presentation purposes I will select first option Set it up for me. Another option is for final installation when you want to select for example your database engine to keep all data that Jira creates.

We select a language for example English and click Save. This setting is possible to change in the future.

From this point we will be redirected to atlassian website where we need to get our unique license number named SEN. If you don’t have any account in atlassian you can do this using instruction from this post about creating id.atlassian.com.

If your company is less than 200 employees you can select Jira Software (Server), if more than propably option Jira Software (Data Center) will be better (you don’t need to waste time and money to organize backup and security process).

In this article we will seleect Jira Software (Server). Select also Your instance is: up and runngin and type Organization name. Finally click Generate License button.

If you don’t make any mistakes you will see something like in the below screen. You should have generate new license key.

We click Yes in Confirmation window to go to the next windows.

Now we need to wait when installation is in finalization step.

You should see the screen Jira is ready to go!

Select the language to your account in your locally installed Jira.

System will ask us to choose an avatar.

Now we can create new project using Create a new project.

In this part we should select one of 6 templates of projects to use. In general the most important difference between all the projects is that we have defined different workflow per project. We select Scrum software development.

We can see that this type of project has a workflow defined from three states: TO DO, IN PROGRESS, DONE.

We need to type the full name of the project (Name) and a kind of shortut (Key).

And now we are ready to start managing newly created projected. This is first project that you need to create during Jira installation process and later delete if you want.

When you log into the system again using locally the addres http://localhost:8080 you will see such a System Dashboard.

Standard System Dashboard consists of:

      • Introduction
      • Assigned to Me list of tasks
      • Activity Stream

You can easily change the look of the dashboard what we will see in one of the next Jira lessons.
